Reporting to the Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation, the Director Athletics is responsible for strategic planning and leadership of the development and delivery of programs and services for the Varsity Athletics Program. The Varsity Athletics Program includes 19 varsity teams, 12 competitive sport clubs and a comprehensive integrated support team comprising of equipment, sport information, athlete academic services, eligibility, compliance, and financial scholarships. As an advisor to the Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation, the incumbent will serve as a member of the Senior Management Team, participating in annual and long-term planning, policy development, overall financial planning, and resource allocation. The incumbent will be a champion of equity, diversity, and inclusion, helping to enhance the environment for teams and athletes to feel safe and supported to thrive. This is a key leadership role that works collaboratively with department staff, other departments, student/faculty groups, alumni/donors, and other community/external groups as it relates to Varsity Athletics. A commitment to meaningfully engaging with the Department’s wide range of stakeholders in an equitable, anti-oppressive manner is essential. The position involves a high degree of independent decision-making responsibility and exercise of personal initiative. The Director will work collegially with managers, coaches, and support staff to foster a high-performance environment that is diverse, inclusive, safe, and reflective of the Department’s and University’s commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression. The Director Athletics will contribute to a highly engaged campus where pride and success are reflected in its programs and services. University degree (Master’s preferred) or a combination of relevant experience, training, and a bachelor’s degree.
Minimum of seven years’ related experience managing an elite or competitive sport program, preferably in an educational environment, including working with high performance coaches, administering budgets, managing schedules and sport event logistics, program planning and review, and committee work.
Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism. Experience in using an equity-informed approach to leading teams and supporting athletes to thrive. A demonstrated history of highly effective human resource management skills, including but not limited to. proactive performance management. Building a strong collaborative team. Mediating conflict. Change management skills. Navigating extremely complex and sensitive issues ensuring adherence to policy and finding resolution. Effective interpersonal and public relations skills. Demonstrated ability to use research to further projects, concepts and policy. Ability to take initiative to progress change and development. The Director will be required to hold strong personal ethics and commit and adhere to Athletics & Recreations (A&R) values and principles of dignity for all, respect for all including their time and contributions, fairness in all we do and create, and to hold the values of inclusivity and equity as key to a safe collaborative environment to foster success. Skilled in written and oral presentation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
Normal office working conditions on most occasions but will attend competitions and practices in outdoor and indoor facilities (Gymnasium, Stadium). Performs administrative duties in an office environment as required. Practices and games held on outdoor playing fields during inclement weather. Some travel is required.

York implemented a revised CPM Compensation Framework in 2019. The Framework is a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Merit Incentive Award.
