Position Summary: The Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coach’s main responsibility will be to oversee most varsity teams’ strength and conditioning performance. The responsibilities will include the creating of a team training programming, team testing, summarizing and monitoring of the testing, operation of team sessions, running on court/field developmental sessions and attending occasional team practices (when necessary). The S&C Coach will need to develop the athletes/team for the success of competition at the OCAA’s & CCAA’s championship. The individual will also continue to support the coaches and the team’s expectation in the pursuit of excellence.
The S&C Coach will be overseen and will report to the Sr. Varsity Coordinator.
The candidate will have close dealings with other members of the Varsity Athletic Department (coaches, managers, athletic therapists, student therapists, administration, facility staff, etc.).
The S&C Coach will assist in encouraging the developing of varsity student-athlete; as well as supporting and educating the student-athlete and teams on how to enhance their athletic performance.
The S&C Coach will also be responsible for supervising/advising and educating the S&C Assistant Coach, student interns, volunteers, and staff.
Responsibilities: perform S&C coaching duties as assigned in a manner that is consistent with the successful operation of the inter-collegiate Strength and Conditioning Program including involvement in: program development, education, implementation, monitoring/evaluation, team and individual goal setting; individual skill technique acquisition and refinement; in/off season strength and conditioning programs; input into session planning, management and evaluation; establishing athlete/team performance targets, evaluation framework and feedback mechanism; testing and program evaluation, and maintenance of regular contact with athletes.
Lead in S&C testing periods, logging results, monitoring athlete performance and flagging issues of compliance (in and off season). Assist in the preparation of annual team/athlete performance reports.
Develop and maintain professional relationships with athletes, coaches, and staff. Stay current with research and practices that are necessary to assist with building and maintaining a provincial and national competitive program.
Lead in the day-to-day monitoring of open times in the Fitness Centre and ensuring that training and use of equipment is conducted in a safe manner.
Supervise and evaluate the student intern. Conduct the screening and interview of intern candidates, providing coaching and feedback related to day-to day supervision; as well as provide direction and technical/functional guidance to the student intern.
Advise Sr. Varsity Coordinator of any at work quality issues; report any situations of unresolved performance and/or disciplinary matters.
Maintain respectful relationship and communication with our Seneca Athletic Therapy Department.
Interact with and support other varsity team programs, participate in department initiatives, attend department events/activities.
Other duties as assigned by the Sr. Varsity Coordinator or Athletic Manager.
Carry out the objectives, beliefs and culture of the department.
Qualifications: Minimum 2 Year Diploma in Fitness Health Promotions, a Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology /Health Sciences is preferred.
NSCA – CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist)
CSEP – CEP (Certification and/or other health and fitness certifications are assets)
Current First Aid and CPR (required)
Minimum of one-three (1-3) years of work related experience in an athletic performance environment, working with athletes in team and individual settings.
Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of S&C profession, strategies and techniques.
The ability to teach/coach/prepare student-athletes for practice and games at a provincial and national level.
Experience dealing with and developing high performance athletes in a college/university environment.
Knowledge and experience with game analysis.
Excellent communication skills, oral, written and presentation. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with people at all levels.
Strong interpersonal skills, creative-thinking and the ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to facilitate groups of people to work towards, and succeed with shared goals.
Ability to exercise discretion, good judgement, and solid decision-making.
Organizational skills and time management abilities are essential.
Proficiency in computer software applications including Microsoft programs.
Basic understanding of the rules and regulations of the OCAA & CCAA is an asset.
Decision Making: Makes decisions regarding the risk, health and welfare of athletes.
Analyses and provide input into athlete profiles and progression in appropriate program.
Determines when to notify or identify training concerns with the respective Head Sport Coach, Sr. Varsity Coordinator, or Head Athletic Therapist
Decisions on prioritizing own duties and responsibilities.
Note: This position will require physical effort. A skills assessment will be administered during the recruitment process.
