Accommodations are available during the hiring process, upon request. The Leader, Physical Training is responsible for creating innovative ways to ensure effective and safe delivery of fitness & wellness services to both sworn and civilian personnel in the Calgary Police Service (CPS). This position supervises and provides guidance to a diverse group of both permanent and on-call staff at the CPS Fitness Unit. Primary duties include:

  • Supervise and lead fitness team members including scheduling, performance management, hire and train new employees.
  • Collaborate with the CCLC Command teams and other internal and external users to help create the organization’s vision as it relates to fitness and wellness.  As a leader this vision will be shared and implemented by the Fitness Team. 
  • Develop and deliver Fitness Unit programs and services and ensure good management of budget resources.
  • Ensure current and best practices around physical fitness are maintained internally for recruit training, in-service specialty areas.
  • Conduct OH&S reporting practices to reduce injuries and maintain integrity of all fitness programs and mitigate risk for the service.
  • Provide guidance and direction for recruit applicant testing and training, recruit training, in-service physical fitness training and competitions. This includes, participating in the working committee under the Alberta Association of Chief’s of Police and provincial testing standards.

Qualifications

  • A Degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years experience as a Physical Training Instructor and experience in leading people & teams, strategic thinking, change management.
  • Previous experience in supervision, leadership, performance management, budget management and experience in developing programs through an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) lens is also required.
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) designation and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) designation is required.
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • A demonstrated commitment to health, wellness, and fitness.
